There is nothing better than getting out on the open road with the wind flowing through your hair on a road trip. The world’s top road trips offer you the chance to see some of the most beautiful parts of the globe. Whether you are looking for coastal drives, mountain exploration, or warm island destinations, we have got the world’s top road trips that are waiting for you.

Atlantic Highway

7. The Atlantic Highway

The Atlantic Highway is routinely called one of the best road trip routes in the world and when driving along this gorgeous stretch of English road, it is difficult to argue with those claims. The Atlantic Highway (officially known as the A39) runs between Bridgewater and Bude, snaking along the northern coast of Cornwall and Devon. It covers the western most portion of Land’s End, a truly secluded location to visit.

The Atlantic sea views are incredible and hypnotizing. On one side of the Atlantic Highway, you will see nothing but the cold waters of the ocean. On the other side, you will see breath-taking hills. You will pass beaches, small villages, and quaint spots to stop off and explore the local countryside. Exmoor National Park is along the route and a great place to spend a day when you have tired of driving.

The Basque Circuit, Bilbao

6. The Basque Circuit

Spain’s Basque Circuit runs 480 kilometers, making its way through Spain’s northern region. You will navigate through some of the Basque region’s most exciting towns and attractions including Bilbao (a must visit), Pamplona, and the Pyrenees Mountains. You will drive along the coast and take in incredible views of the Bay of Biscay.

One of the popular activities to enjoy is stopping off to sample local, artisan foods. You can try a variety of tapas dishes, sip red wine, and relax in style along the route. The Basque country offers endless beauty and road trip enthusiasts will enjoy every kilometer of the journey.

Great Ocean Road, Australia

5. Great Ocean Road

The Great Ocean Road is Australia’s premier road trip adventure. Stretching 285 kilometers from Torquay to Warrnambool in Victoria, it is a spectacular drive that takes in portions of Australia’s Shipwreck Coast. The journey’s main highlight is the Twelve Apostles rock formation. The limestone rock stacks ascend from the water toward heaven some 65 feet.

The road was built in memory of Australian soldiers who died in World War I. The memory of the soldiers is alive and well as you cascade along the coastline and through rainforests. The Great Ocean Road covers a distance of 253 kilometers. One of the cool places to stop off is Bells Beach, which was featured in the Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, crime buddy-flick, Point Break.

Cabot Trail, Nova Scotia

4. Cabot Trail

Canada’s Cabot Trail is located on Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. The route covers 296 kilometers and takes around four-and-a-half hours to complete. The Cabot trail is tucked away on Nova Scotia’s northernmost tip, making it a road trip many people won’t have explored. Those that do drive the Cabot Trail are in for a real treat.

It is located in one of Canada’s most beautiful wilderness areas. You will find glacial valleys, rugged mountains, lush green forests, and rocky coastlines along the way. Cape Breton is home to the Highlands National Park. Stop off and explore the beautiful, scenic area to see moose, black bears, and other native animals. It is easy to see the old-world influence on Nova Scotia from the French and Scottish explorers that landed in the area long ago.

Niagra Falls

3. New York City to Niagra Falls

If you want an epic road trip that starts with the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s biggest cities and ends with the majesty of a breath-taking waterfall, then the New York City to Niagara Falls route is ideal. The road trip is an incredible 2,100 kilometers and stretches from the Big Apple all the way to the falls and back. No matter the time of year you want to make the trip, it is a brilliant route and each season offers something completely different.

Driving through the Catskills and Adirondacks makes you completely forget that just a few hours previously, you were sitting in New York City traffic. The towns of upper New York are fascinating and more New England than NYC. It takes around seven hours to make the drive from New York City to Niagara Falls. It is a long distance, but well worth it when you see the falls.

Corsica Road

2. Corsica Road

Corsica is a French island located in the Mediterranean Sea. It is a prime piece of holiday real estate receiving over 300 days of sunshine a year. The Corsica Road takes in the beautiful sunlight that beams down on the island and takes drivers on a journey of discovery. This isn’t your typical road trip as it offers the opportunity to see medieval villages, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and more than 200 beaches.

The Corsica Road is 112 kilometers long, stretching from Calvi to Cargese. You will drive around, past, and over rugged mountains and forests. The natural landscapes are mind-bending as you drive through gorges and take in the unique views of Scandola, which is known for its red cliffs.

Bavaria, Germany

1. Romantic Road

The Romantic Road is a 350-kilometer route that stretches from Wurzburg to Fussen in Germany’s Bavaria region. There is nothing quite like this part of Germany as you take in views of medieval castles, vineyards, and lush forests. The sights along the Romantic Road look like they have come directly out of a fairytale.

The route is loosely based on the old Roman road that existed between the towns of Wurzburg and Fussen in ancient times. The Romantic Road is based on the history of the region, but is a modern-day creation. The road was built in 1950 initially as a tourist attraction and was loved by United States military members and their families stationed in Germany. Today, the Romantic Road is loved by millions of people who have explored its twists and turns.
